20th Century Fox announced a "contemporary origin story" delving into the world of Planet of the Apes is heading to theaters on June 24, 2011. Rise of the Apes (tentative title) will be a completely new take on the classic franchise says Fox.
Rupert Wyatt (writer/director of The Escapist) will direct from a script by Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa (The Relic, Eye for an Eye). Silver, Jaffa, Peter Chernin, and Dylan Clark are producing.
Rise of the Apes (the title's growing on me the more I type it) will be utilizing Oscar-winning WETA Digital to make "groundbreaking" photo-real apes. WETA also did the ape effects in Peter Jackson's 2005 remake of King Kong. According to Fox, they will be using "technologies developed for Avatar [and] will render, for the first time ever in the film series, photo-realistic apes rather than costumed actors."
Rise of the Apes Synopsis
Rise of the Apes is an origin story in the truest sense of the term. Set in present day San Francisco, the film is a reality-based cautionary tale, a science fiction/science fact blend, where man’s own experiments with genetic engineering lead to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy."
